FAQs

Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and Olympic sport that emphasizes throwing, grappling, balance, and technique over strength. It teaches practical self-defense skills while building confidence, discipline, respect, and physical fitness.

1

What is Judo?

Yes. Safety is the foundation of every class. Students learn proper falling techniques (ukemi) before practicing throws, and all training is supervised by qualified instructors. Classes are structured to ensure students progress at an appropriate pace.

2

Is Judo safe?

Not at all! Our beginner classes are designed for students with no prior martial arts experience. We welcome participants of all fitness levels and backgrounds.

3

Do I need experience?

Comfortable athletic clothing such as a T-shirt and sweatpants or athletic shorts (without zippers) is perfect for your first class. Once you decide to continue training, you'll need a judo uniform (judogi), and we're happy to help you find the right one.

4

What should I wear?

No. Judo helps improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. You'll build your fitness as you train.

5

Do I need to be in shape?

Yes! We encourage new students to attend a trial class so they can meet our instructors, experience the training environment, and see if Judo is right for them.

6

Can I try a class?

Yes. Judo teaches effective techniques for controlling balance, escaping holds, and safely taking an opponent to the ground. While Judo is also an Olympic sport, its techniques are rooted in practical self-defense.
